  • The anterior compartment (Fig.1b) contains the main extensors of the knee joint.
  • It lies between the medial and lateral intermuscular septi
  • The muscles are essential for locomotion and sports.

 

 

Description

(LEARNER OUTCOMES)

  • To describe the anterior compartment of the thigh.
  • To recognize the 3 intermuscular septi
  • To recognize the quadriceps and other muscles that form the group
  • To recognize the quadriceps tendon and the patella ligament
  • To recognize the tailor’s muscle
  • To recognize that all the muscles in the compartment are supplied blood by the femoral artery (Except pectineus)
  • To recognize that all muscles are innervated by the femoral nerve (sometimes pectineus is supplied by the obturator nerve)
  • To appreciate the course, relationship and branches of the femoral artery
  • To appreciate the adductor canal of Hunter and the arrangement of it’s contents.
  • To appreciate the role of the anterior compartment on sports.
  • To recognize a quadriceps tendon and patella ligament tear, femoral pulsation, use of femoral artery in venopucture, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery and imaging.
